Stop Medicaid Cuts in the “Big, Beautiful Bill”
The Issue
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1) proposes $600–880 billion in Medicaid cuts over 10 years, threatening health coverage for nearly 11 million Americans. Yale and UPenn researchers estimate it would cause 51,000 unnecessary deaths each year, including 11,300 due to coverage loss.
For people with diabetes, the stakes are even higher:
Medicaid expansion has been proven to dramatically improve diabetes diagnosis, medication use, and overall management. It nearly quintupled new diabetes diagnoses and almost doubled medication uptake.
A quarter of the 38 million Americans living with diabetes rely on Medicaid for insulin, glucose monitoring, medical visits, and devices.
Better insurance coverage through Medicaid is linked to improved blood sugar control and fewer costly complications like hospitalizations—reducing the risk of severe outcomes and death.
Research consistently shows Medicaid coverage reduces mortality, including among those with chronic illnesses like diabetes. ACA expansions saved lives by diagnosing and treating disease earlier.
Cutting Medicaid means that people with diabetes will no longer receive timely diagnoses, medications and medical devices (like insulin and CGM), necessary doctor visits, or life-saving disease management—leading to costlier complications, more hospitalizations, and higher death rates.
What You Can Do
It takes 1 minute to make a call. Why call? Because anyone can click send on a form email, but people who really care will call their representatives–and government officials know this and will take notice. They know the people who call are the ones who care and are the ones who will make sure their friends vote against them in the next election.
After you call, we ask that you forward this to your family members, friends, and other diabetics you know.
The Script
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I’m a constituent from [CITY, STATE].
I’m calling because I’m deeply alarmed by the “Big, Beautiful Bill” that includes massive Medicaid cuts. Studies from Yale and UPenn show these cuts would strip 11 million people of coverage, cause over 51,000 preventable deaths annually—and importantly, they would severely disrupt diabetes care. Millions rely on Medicaid for insulin, glucose monitoring, and access to doctors. Losing this support puts lives at risk.
Please urge Senator [LAST NAME] to oppose any bill that cuts Medicaid, especially given its critical role supporting people with diabetes. Thank you.
