How Many People Use Insulin in the U.S.?
In order to pressure our political representatives to support affordable insulin legislation, it’s important for them to understand how many of their constituents would be affected by it.
Using population estimates by the U.S. Census and rate of diabetes statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), we’ve estimated the number of insulin users in each state and congressional district in the U.S.
If you’re contacting your representatives, you can cite these numbers to garner their support.
Insulin Users per State
Insulin Users per Congressional District
Methodology:
Population estimates from U.S. Census Bureau 2021 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates
Rate of diabetes from Center from U.S. Disease Control and Prevention Diabetes Report Card (2017)
Insulin user rate from NIDDK estimate of 14% of people with diabetes use insulin only and an additional 13% of people with diabetes use insulin & oral medication.
